Bird-form Copper-Alloy Object with Forked Terminal — Scholarly Analysis
Extended scholarly study of "Bird-form Copper-Alloy Object with Forked Terminal" (accession JCA.2025.010): material analysis, authentication methodology, comparative works, and bibliography.

Extended description
A compact bird-form object with a raised rounded eye, short projecting beak, curved neck, feather-like wing relief and short tail. A stout lower stem joins the body to an asymmetric open fork. The photographs support bird identification; species is unresolved. A finial or terminal is the leading functional hypothesis, strengthened by the similar bird/stem/unequal-fork construction of JCA.2026.061. The original host, fastening and orientation are unestablished. Copper alloy is a provisional catalog attribution, composition untested. Date, culture, completeness and ancient authenticity remain unresolved.
Technical analysis
All three linked photographs examined. No dimensions, weight, full reverse or underside supplied. Cast manufacture is compatible with modeled relief but remains provisional. Alloy, mineral species and corrosion activity cannot be determined from appearance. Document measurements, terminal faces, contact wear and joins before analytical testing.
Authentication methodology
Separate visible morphology from catalog information and attribution hypotheses. Compare whole construction and attachment mechanisms, not bird imagery alone. High confidence: bird. Moderate: broad finial/terminal hypothesis. Low: a particular host. Unresolved: species, date, culture and ancient authenticity. Prioritize complete scaled photography, provenance recovery and conservator examination; multi-point XRF/radiography may assist if indicated but do not directly date manufacture.
Comparative works
JCA.2026.061: closest complete structural comparison, but private-collection origin and Luristan date are provisional. LACMA M.76.174.110 (https://collections.lacma.org/object/64936): open curved attachment, undated. LACMA M.76.97.661 (https://collections.lacma.org/object/5205): bird modeling comparison explicitly dated modern. Met 37.40.32 (https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/449142): excavated Nishapur bird finial, ninth-tenth century, straight tang differs. Met 1972.118.89, 61.100.3a,b and 1973.11.5,.6 illustrate distinct vessel/vehicle mechanisms; the last record notes June 2026 restitution. No independently dated exact match was established.
Provenance
Private collection; earlier ownership history and findspot undocumented. No archaeological provenance established. The catalog date is administrative and does not date manufacture. No provenance is inferred from resemblance to JCA.2026.061.
Historical context
Finial/terminal is a testable functional hypothesis. Both JCA objects have bird/stem/unequal-fork construction, which makes intentional asymmetry plausible. This does not establish common workshop, mold, culture or date. Published ancient and modern bird fittings require comparison of contact surfaces, mounting geometry and scale.
Conservation history
No documented treatment or monitoring history supplied. Existing claims of stable patination, no active corrosion and structural integrity were not verified. Record new powdering or surface changes and consult a conservator; do not clean contact surfaces or deposits before documentation.
