JCA.2026.004 is a compact cloth-bound New Testament approximately 4 7/8 × 2 7/8 × 3/4 in., retaining a Gideons emblem, American flag frontispiece and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s January 25, 1941 message to members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Comparable museum examples are nearly identical in scale and format: the Northwest Museum records a 1941 Gideons New Testament and Psalms measuring about 4.85 × 2.85 × 0.75 in. with Roosevelt’s January 25, 1941 letter, while Victorian Collections records a National Bible Press/Gideons U.S. Armed Forces pocket volume with the same White House message. These parallels strongly support the service-testament identification.
Technical analysis
The volume uses thin printed paper and a compact cloth-covered binding designed for pocket carry. Technical bibliographic documentation should record pagination, exact title, publisher/imprint, printing location, copyright line, typography, frontispiece, presentation pages and binding construction. Wear, page toning and edge rubbing are consistent with handling but cannot identify a military owner or theater. The Roosevelt letter date is a terminus for this edition format, not automatically the exact print date of every surviving copy.
Authentication methodology
Authentication and dating should be bibliographic rather than stylistic. The Gideons International history states that military-distribution approval was obtained in 1940–41 and 50,000 Testaments were ordered in January 1941.
