Extended description

JCA.2026.063 is a Swiss-made Dunhill Rollagas pocket lighter approximately 2 5/8 × 1 × 0.5 in., constructed in brass with gold plating and a continuous vertical fluted/ribbed finish. It retains the Rollagas side roller, hinged lid and refillable butane architecture. The base markings read “dunhill,” “MADE IN SWITZERLAND,” and “US RE24163 PATENTED.” The finish and proportions closely parallel JCA.2026.057, but the objects should remain separate catalogue entries because each has its own surface wear, collection history and physical identity.

Technical analysis

The object combines a machined/fluted plated-brass shell with a refillable liquefied-gas mechanism. U.S. Reissue Patent 24,163, issued to Conrad Zellweger in 1956, describes the filling-valve solution for liquefied-gas lighters associated with La Nationale SA’s Swiss engineering. The base patent legend on JCA.2026.063 is therefore a meaningful technical mark rather than decorative text. It anchors the internal fuel-system lineage but does not distinguish one decorative Rollagas finish from another or provide a precise assembly year.

Authentication methodology

Identification is supported by the Dunhill/Swiss base marks, exact patent reference, body dimensions, roller/lid construction, butane architecture and quality of the vertically fluted plating. Authentication should be strengthened with perpendicular base photography, under-lid and burner views, hinge and filler-valve details, weight, and any small production/date codes. Direct comparison with JCA.2026.057 is useful for consistency but should not turn similarity into shared provenance or a single group accession.

Comparative works

Dunhill’s official history documents the Rollagas launch in 1956 and its development with Conrad Zellweger/La Nationale SA, while USRE24163E documents the Swiss engineer’s filling-valve system. JCA.2026.057 provides an internal Cabinet comparator with the same principal base legend and vertical fluting but distinct condition/provenance. Christie’s mid-century Rollagas examples provide an external model-family comparison without assigning an exact year to this specimen.

Provenance

Acquired as part of a grouped private lighter collection purchase. The group acquisition establishes JCA’s immediate collection history but not this lighter’s original owner, retail date, presentation history or earlier custody. No original packaging, warranty/service document or dated receipt is presently recorded for JCA.2026.063.

Historical context

Rollagas design joined luxury surface finishing to a technically complex refillable gas system. Vertical fluting is one of several surface treatments found across Dunhill lighter production, and the Cabinet’s grouped examples make it possible to compare finish and wear without treating decorative pattern names as chronological proof. The historically important engineering change is the regulated butane system introduced with the Rollagas family.

Conservation history

The lighter has been non-invasively serviced and is recorded as fully functional. Edge wear, light scratching and oxidation within the recessed flutes should be preserved as condition evidence rather than polished away. Record any future seal, flint or other consumable replacement. For archival storage, avoid long-term fuel retention where practical and isolate the plated body from abrasive contact with neighboring metal objects.
