Dunhill Rollagas Pocket Lighter, Diamond Pattern, Concealed Hinge — Scholarly Analysis
Extended scholarly study of "Dunhill Rollagas Pocket Lighter, Diamond Pattern, Concealed Hinge" (accession JCA.2026.064): material analysis, authentication methodology, comparative works, and bibliography.

Extended description
JCA.2026.064 is a Swiss-made Dunhill Rollagas pocket lighter measuring approximately 2 5/8 × 1 × 0.5 in. and 79 g. It carries an engine-turned diamond pattern across the plated case, a side roller ignition system, concealed hinge, and base stamps “dunhill,” “MADE IN SWITZERLAND,” and “US. RE24163 PATENTED.” It was acquired with JCA.2026.065, an exposed-hinge lighter with closely matching finish and dimensions. The concealed hinge is historically significant because Dunhill dates that Rollagas feature to 1971.
Technical analysis
The lighter combines an engine-turned plated-brass case with the Rollagas refillable butane system. US Reissue Patent 24,163, issued in 1956 to Conrad Zellweger/La Nationale SA, documents the liquefied-gas filling-valve architecture referenced on the base. The concealed hinge is a separate case-design feature introduced by Dunhill in 1971. Technical examination should distinguish the hinge construction from the valve/fuel system and document whether the diamond pattern is cut, rolled, or otherwise machine-finished.
Authentication methodology
Identification is supported by Dunhill/Swiss base stamps, the correct Zellweger patent reference, Rollagas proportions/mechanism, concealed hinge and machining quality. Obtain perpendicular base macros, hinge detail, under-lid/burner views, filler/flame-control details and any small date/production marks. Compare JCA.2026.065 side by side for construction consistency, but do not assume the two were manufactured together merely because they were sold as a pair.
Comparative works
Dunhill’s official lighter history dates the Rollagas to 1956 and the concealed hinge to 1971. USRE24163E documents the Swiss filling-valve patent lineage. JCA.2026.065 provides an internal exposed-hinge comparator with matching diamond finish and the same principal base legend. These sources support model, technical lineage and a post-1971 terminus for JCA.2026.064.
Provenance
Acquired as one of a paired lot of two Dunhill Rollagas lighters, the pairmate being JCA.2026.065. No evidence currently establishes that the two were originally retailed as a set, manufactured in the same year, or shared ownership before the modern lot. Earlier individual provenance is undocumented.
Historical context
The hidden/exposed hinge comparison is more useful as evidence of Rollagas design development than as a simplistic early-versus-late chronology. Dunhill explicitly dates concealed-hinge introduction to 1971, but exposed-hinge examples may coexist with later production. The Cabinet pair should therefore foreground observable construction differences and validated termini rather than collector assumptions.
Conservation history
Mechanical functionality is not confirmed. Preserve the engine-turned surfaces, plated finish, base stamps and concealed hinge without abrasive polishing. Before servicing, photograph hinge action, burner, filler valve and base. Record replacement seals/flints or other consumables separately from original components. Store unfueled where practical.
