Dunhill Rollagas Pocket Lighter, Diamond Pattern, Exposed Hinge — Scholarly Analysis
Extended scholarly study of "Dunhill Rollagas Pocket Lighter, Diamond Pattern, Exposed Hinge" (accession JCA.2026.065): material analysis, authentication methodology, comparative works, and bibliography.

Extended description
JCA.2026.065 is a Swiss-made Dunhill Rollagas lighter approximately 2 5/8 × 1 × 0.5 in. and 79 g, with a silver-tone plated case carrying an engine-turned diamond pattern, exposed hinge, side roller and base stamps “dunhill,” “MADE IN SWITZERLAND,” and “US. RE24163 PATENTED.” It was acquired in the same modern lot as JCA.2026.064, whose closely matching case has a concealed hinge. JCA.2026.065 was functional at cataloguing.
Technical analysis
The object uses the Rollagas refillable butane architecture and a visibly exposed hinge. The base patent legend references USRE24163E, the 1956 Zellweger/La Nationale filling-valve reissue. Hinge architecture and fuel-valve technology must be evaluated independently: the patent identifies a gas-filling system, while the exposed hinge describes case construction. Wear/residue within the case and diamond pattern should be documented before any further servicing.
Authentication methodology
Authentication is supported by the Dunhill/Swiss stamps, correct patent reference, Rollagas mechanism/proportions, exposed hinge and engine-turned finish. Compare directly to JCA.2026.064 for shared machining and base layout, while preserving separate object identities. Future work should capture base, hinge, under-lid, burner and valve macros and any production/date code not already recorded.
Comparative works
Dunhill documents Rollagas introduction in 1956 and concealed hinge introduction in 1971; these facts establish the broader model history but do not date every exposed-hinge example. USRE24163E documents the filling valve. JCA.2026.064 is the primary internal paired comparator, showing the same broad finish/marks with concealed hinge construction.
Provenance
Acquired as one of a paired lot with JCA.2026.064. No earlier owner, retailer, box, receipt, service record or evidence of original pairing is documented. The paired modern acquisition should not be converted into a claim of factory-set status.
Historical context
Rollagas lighters permit the Cabinet to study how a long-lived product family varied in finish and construction while retaining a recognizable gas/roller architecture. The JCA.2026.064/JCA.2026.065 pair is strongest as a comparative construction study; chronological claims should remain tied to independently documented features and marks.
Conservation history
Recorded as fully functional at cataloguing. Preserve plated and engine-turned surfaces, base legend and exposed hinge without aggressive polishing. Store unfueled where practical and document any future replacement seals, flints or maintenance parts. Avoid repeated ignition solely for display/testing.
