Extended description

JCA.2026.066 is a Swiss-made Dunhill Rollagas lighter approximately 2.5 × 1 × 0.5 in. with gold-tone plated brass, side roller ignition, hinged cap and a geometric/plaid engine-turned exterior. The base is marked “dunhill,” “MADE IN SWITZERLAND,” and “US RE 24163 PATENTED.” Wear has exposed brass at edges/high-contact points while the patterned recesses retain darker residue.

Technical analysis

The plated brass case is mechanically patterned independently of the internal Rollagas gas system. USRE24163E identifies the Zellweger filling-valve technology associated with refillable liquefied-gas lighters. Technical documentation should distinguish plating loss from intentional pattern geometry and record roller, hinge, burner, filler valve and flame-control components.

Authentication methodology

Converging evidence includes correct brand/manufacture/patent base stamps, expected proportions, roller ignition, butane architecture and machining quality. Future base and mechanism macros should seek any date/production code. Full function supports completeness but is not a dating test.

Comparative works

Dunhill’s official Rollagas history and USRE24163E establish model/technical context. JCA JCA.2026.057, JCA.2026.063, JCA.2026.064, JCA.2026.065, and JCA.2026.067 provide internal comparanda for finish and hinge variation across Swiss Rollagas examples.

Provenance

Acquired as part of a group lot of vintage Dunhill lighters. No earlier owner, original retailer, box, papers or dated service record is documented for this specimen.

Historical context

Dunhill used multiple plated, fluted and engine-turned surfaces across its luxury-lighter production. The Cabinet group is therefore best read as a comparative design/engineering set rather than as a sequence in which every surface pattern has an implied date or hierarchy.

Conservation history

Recorded as fully functional with moderate/heavy plating wear. Do not replate or aggressively polish, as exposed brass and recess residues document use. Store unfueled where practical; document future seal/flint maintenance and preserve base stamps.
