Extended description

JCA.2026.092 is a round bronze Italian campaign medal approximately 32 mm in diameter and 16 g. The obverse bears the helmeted left-facing portrait of King Victor Emmanuel III with “GUERRA PER L’UNITA D’ITALIA 1915 1918” and the recorded signature of sculptor Silvio Canevari. The reverse presents winged Victory above military trophies and “CONIATA NEL BRONZO NEMICO.” The accompanying ribbon repeats the Italian tricolor sequence. Italian cultural-heritage records document the same Canevari design at approximately 32–33 mm and date surviving examples to after the 1920 institution of the medal.

Technical analysis

The object is a struck bronze medal with textile ribbon and suspension ring. Diagnostic evidence includes diameter, Canevari signature, portrait, reverse Victory composition, legends and ribbon sequence. The medal was produced by multiple establishments, so a manufacturer should not be assigned unless a mint/foundry mark is present and legible. Patina and wear are compatible with age, while the ribbon could be original, period replacement or later replacement. Absence of campaign-year clasps is observable but does not identify the recipient’s service duration.

Authentication methodology

Compare obverse/reverse dies, Canevari signature, diameter, suspension, edge and any manufacturer marks to museum-catalogued official examples. Photograph the edge and area beneath the bust to seek a producer mark. XRF could characterize alloy if needed but cannot prove that the bronze originated from captured artillery. Recipient attribution requires an award document or provenance chain; visual authenticity of the medal does not supply a name or unit.

Comparative works

Lombardia Beni Culturali catalogues Silvio Canevari examples of the Medaglia commemorativa della Guerra Italo-austriaca 1915–1918, post-1920, bronze, approximately 32–33 mm, with Victor Emmanuel III on the obverse and winged Victory on the reverse. Italy’s national cultural catalogue records the same inscriptions, tricolor ribbon and 32 mm format. These are close institutional comparanda for JCA.2026.092.

Provenance

From a private collection; earlier ownership and award history are undocumented. No recipient name, unit, award certificate, campaign clasps, family provenance or original issue packet is currently attached. The medal must therefore remain an unassociated example of the official decoration.

Historical context

Royal Decree no. 1241 linked the medal to both war service and a state narrative of completing Italian unity. Campaign bars could record years of service, with later provisions also addressing Albania service. JCA.2026.092 has no recorded bars. The phrase “enemy bronze” should be presented as part of the decree and commemorative ideology while preserving museum caution about whether every surviving medal can be materially traced to captured guns.

Conservation history

No formal treatment history is documented. Do not polish the bronze or wet-clean the tricolor ribbon. Support the frayed textile and isolate it from rough medal edges during storage. Preserve patina and any small manufacturer/edge marks. If corrosion becomes active, stabilization should be undertaken by a conservator before cosmetic cleaning.
