Extended description

JCA.2026.116 is Arthur Szyk's 1942 wartime poster Fool the Axis—Use Prophylaxis, a hybrid of anti-Axis caricature and military venereal-disease prevention messaging. The composition transforms Benito Mussolini, Hideki Tojo, and Adolf Hitler into personifications of gonorrhea, chancroid, and syphilis while urging prophylactic prevention. The sheet measures approximately 16 × 22 in. and retains Szyk's signature and 1942 date, the John Wyeth & Brother, Inc., Philadelphia publisher line, and the printed reference PRINTED IN U.S.A. — VP-2.

Technical analysis

The object is a color print on paper retaining multiple vertical storage folds, horizontal creasing, moderate toning, and localized wear along fold lines. Its printed typography, color registration, publisher line, artist/date mark, and VP-2 reference form an integrated period printing rather than later captioning added to an unrelated image. Detailed print-process identification has not yet been undertaken microscopically, so the present record describes the object conservatively as a color-printed paper poster.

Authentication methodology

Period attribution is based on the agreement of dimensions, composition, Szyk signature and 1942 date, John Wyeth & Brother publisher imprint, VP-2 reference, typography, fold pattern, and age-consistent paper condition with documented examples of the design. No one feature is treated as sufficient by itself. The present conclusion supports an authentic 1942 printing; microscopic paper-fiber and print-process examination could provide additional confirmation if required.

Comparative works

The same 1942 Szyk design is documented in the Arthur Szyk Collection and in published digital holdings, with the identical Philadelphia attribution and wartime prophylaxis message. Direct comparison confirms the characteristic three Axis caricatures, disease labels, prophylaxis slogan, and Szyk's visual language. Comparable U.S. military venereal-disease posters demonstrate the broader public-health campaign, but Szyk's fusion of enemy caricature and medical prevention is unusually distinctive.

Provenance

Acquired by the Joshua Cabinet of Antiquities; earlier ownership history is undocumented. No named serviceman, medical unit, pharmacy, military installation, or distribution point is presently associated with this particular sheet. The surviving publisher and VP-2 markings establish publication identity but not individual circulation history.

Historical context

The poster belongs to the extensive wartime campaign against venereal disease among military personnel, where public-health instruction was frequently combined with humor, fear, patriotism, and enemy caricature. Szyk's imagery links sexual disease to the Axis leadership, turning prophylaxis into both a medical precaution and a symbolic act of wartime resistance. The work is therefore valuable as evidence of the intersection between military medicine, commercial pharmaceutical publishing, propaganda, and caricature.

Conservation history

The sheet is complete and visually strong but structurally vulnerable at old fold lines. It should remain supported by acid-free, lignin-free materials and be displayed only with UV-filtering glazing and low light levels. Existing folds should not be forcibly flattened without paper-conservation assessment, because embrittled fibers may split. Pressure-sensitive tape, dry mounting, lamination, surface cleaning with erasers, and aqueous treatment should be avoided outside professional conservation.
