Japanese Automatic Table Lighter in Ice-Textured Clear Glass Holder
Accession JCA.2026.139. Lighter, 20th Century. Part of the JCA Archives collection, documented through direct examination, original photography, and provenance review.

Object description
An automatic tabletop cigarette lighter consisting of a nearly square, irregularly contoured transparent glass block with thick walls and a deeply fractured, sculptural 'ice' surface. Its straight-sided yet unevenly outlined profile has softly angular shoulders, a flattened upper plane and irregular edges. The glass refracts light through ripples, folds, trapped-looking bubbles and glassy concavities, giving the appearance of a block of ice. At its center a round metal-rimmed socket accepts a removable chrome-colored metal automatic lighter insert. The mechanism includes a rounded, approximately oval flaring reservoir body, a horizontal thumb-operated lever with textured tapered pad, a central arched pivot with transverse slot-headed screw, and an opposite snuffer-like cover. The pivot support reads JAPAN, confirming manufacture of the removable metal insert in Japan but not identifying the glassmaker. A separate photograph displays the lighter insert beside its holder; another shows the glass block inverted with a circular molded or recessed underside feature. Both glass and mechanism are catalogued together as the assembled functional object, without claiming a documented factory-original pairing.
Dating
c. 1960s–1970s (provisional)
Dating evidence
c. 1960s–1970s is a broad provisional stylistic date supported by the prevalence of rough-textured clear-glass table lighter and Japanese metal insert combinations in that period. No model number, documented patent, marked year, original catalogue entry, factory trademark or production-date inscription is visible. Neither first manufacture nor discontinuation of this specific design is established. The glass and associated insert might not be coeval.
Materials
Substantial transparent colorless textured glass block, likely molded or pressed but process unverified; separate chrome-colored plated base-metal removable automatic lighter head with steel mechanism, metal collar and probable wick/flint fuel parts (internal construction not examined). Composition of glass and precise alloys unknown.
Identifying marks
JAPAN stamped below the pivot screw on one face of the removable chrome-colored automatic lighter insert. No legible maker/model name is established on its photographed lever. No maker's mark, etched signature, factory label, patent number, or model indication identified on the clear glass holder. Original inserts or old label remnants should be examined under magnification.
Condition
Fully functional, owner-confirmed for the JCA table-lighter collection; no independent operation test observed for this particular insert. From five owner photographs, the heavy irregular clear-glass block appears substantially intact. Organic craggy, fissured, bubbled, ice-like texture covers the sides, with rounded uneven edges and a relatively flatter upper rim. No major missing chunk or full-thickness crack is clearly evident; the internal rippled/refraction pattern could conceal tiny chips or flaws pending hands-on examination. The circular neck opening retains its metallic seating ring. The chrome-colored removable lighter has fine scratches, tarnish/discoloration around the lower flange and pivot and numerous handling marks. Pivot bracket marked JAPAN. The holder's underside has an integral round recess/socket and rough-textured surrounding surface; no manufacturer's inscription or label apparent from supplied views. Completeness and original pairing unverified.
Historical context
Heavy clear-glass cube and 'ice glass' table lighters formed part of the international mid-century market for desk and smoking accessories in the 1960s–1970s. Their richly refracting surfaces and chrome metal inserts were consistent with the period's Space Age, Brutalist and Scandinavian-influenced decorative taste. A specialist 14 September 2026 auction assortment of mid-century table lighters explicitly included 'an irregularly shaped clear glass block with a heavy craggy ice texture' alongside several Japanese-marked removable mechanisms. This is a useful shape/genre parallel, but does not prove common glass manufacture or this object's origin. An unbranded 'Vintage Glass Cube Table Lighter' offered on Etsy in 2026 likewise has a Japanese-marked chrome insert and a clear thick-walled glass cube, though its glass surface is comparatively regular. Some other clear glass cube lighters are attributed by sellers to Italian designer Antonio Imperatore, but those typically have distinct optical circular concavities and no secure attribution is established for this rough-textured block. The generic JAPAN stamp identifies the insert manufacturing country; Japanese-made inserts were used in glass holders of many origins and were also sold as interchangeable replacement components. Production records, a maker's label or dated retailer advertisement for this exact glass design have not been located.
Curatorial note
Photographic intake 1 November 2026, Table Lighter No. 6, accession JCA.2026.139. Five owner-supplied photos, including front and angled views, removed chrome head, and inverted underside showing center molded circular recess; final catalogue photos not uploaded. Glass unmarked from available views; JAPAN stamp clearly visible on pivot of insert. This is an unbranded JAPAN-marked head, not identifiable as Ronson or Penguin without another maker mark. Glass manufacturer/country and method (pressed/cast/blown, lead content) unknown; cannot assert Murano/Imperatore or Scandinavian origin. Date broadly c. 1960s–1970s provisional. Like JCA.2026.136's initial associated metal head, similar Japanese automatic mechanism design appears, but identity of physical components not established: do not conflate accession entries. Functionality owner-confirmed. Final inspection should record height, length/width, detached head measures, combined and component weight, inspect glass underside for wear, pontil/mold seams/labels, hold transmitted light for inclusions, magnify potential molded inscriptions, check chips and repairs, photograph insert underside/filler/active ignition with safety precautions, establish petrol versus gas and brand, and confirm associated-component originality. Keep draft unpublished and exclude valuations/private acquisition information.
Significance
A strong visual example of the intersection of mid-century ice-textured decorative glass and the internationally distributed Japanese removable automatic lighter mechanisms. The unusually massive clear cuboid glass block, organically rippled surface, and polished chromium-colored mechanism establish a sculptural display value. The artifact demonstrates the importance of treating a removable lighter's stamped origin separately from the unidentified glass manufacturer's identity.
